Glazing is where the science of chemistry meets the intuition of art. Each of our signature colors starts as a dusty mixture of minerals like cobalt, copper, and iron. It is hard to believe that a drab grey powder will transform into a brilliant, glassy turquoise once it hits 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit in the kiln.
Testing and Refinement
We spend months testing small batches of glaze on little clay tiles. We look at how the color breaks over the edges of a piece and how it reacts to the texture of the clay underneath. It is a process of constant refinement until we find that perfect shade that feels both vibrant and timeless.
The Surprise of the Kiln
Even with all our testing, there is always an element of mystery. The way the kiln is packed or the humidity in the air can subtly change the final outcome. This unpredictability is part of what makes handmade ceramics so special; every firing brings a slightly new version of the colors we love.
